Production update: Next steps

Screen Shot 2012-05-15 at 2.43.54 PM

We’ve received numerous requests for updates on where we are in the production of “extraordinary: the Stan Romanek story,” and although we’ve answered the question numerous times in comments on this website and via YouTube, we decided to do it one more time in a post.

We are in post-production, which requires video editing, sound editing, scoring and mastering, among many other elements. Another big part of the process is the development and execution of a distribution plan. We’ve had many people ask why we don’t distribute the film directly, and the answer is simple: Direct distribution reaches a specific target audience — people who already believe. In order to reach a larger audience — which has been our goal from the very beginning of this project — we are exploring several distribution options, including screeners and bringing the film to festivals.

In order to reach an audience of believers, fence-sitters and skeptics, we have to deliver a compelling story about people and their struggles to survive. That has been a goal from day one, too. If we created a documentary film highlighting only Stan’s evidence, it would not have been an accessible film. It would, more than likely, become a target for criticism and debunking. Instead, we’re telling a human story that is made more extraordinary by the element of Stan’s compelling experiences. We’re telling a story that believers and non-believers alike will connect with because everyone can relate to the human side of Stan and Lisa’s story.

Yes, the evidence will be there. But the emotion will be there, too. The challenges, the obstacles, the fear, the hanging-by-a-thread-to-get-by emotionally, spiritually and mentally will be present throughout.

Stan’s story is best told as a human story vs. a science fiction story. Doing so makes it accessible to larger audiences because the film is more appealing. The goal is to create awareness among the masses vs. preach to the choir. We want as many eyeballs as we can possibly get on this film. That’s how we can impact awareness.

As for dates and locations, we don’t have those finalized yet. When we do, we will post them here for everyone to see. Thanks for your patience and continue interest in this important project.

Hey John, sorry for the delayed response. We just found a bunch of comments that didn’t get posted. We considered crowd-sourcing, but ultimately opted not to for a variety of reason better explained over a beer or two. The good news is we announced today on the site our world premiere at FLIFF in Florida. Stay tuned!

I realize the importance of good/thorough Promotion and Canvasing but I’m beginning to question in my own mind ‘why’ these delays? This Release is now long overdue & my faith has dwindled somewhat. I have become extremely skeptical as to to motives for such a delay and a degree of ingenuity has invaded my personal thoughts! Unfortunately having purchased all of Stan’s previous publications this does reflect on my overall opinion of his Case, sorry to say. I suppose he must have his own reasons for inviting J3 to carry his message to the masses.

Thanks for dropping by Bobby. I’m sure you’re aware that films require contracts and financial commitments and investors and pre-production, production and post-production resources, etc. This project is being created shoestring budget when it comes to those involved on the creative side. Investor money and a lot of out of pocket expense have covered the expenses. On top of that, many legal delays, stops and starts and a variety of challenges for all involved have created obstacles along the way. j3FILMS is not our day job, it’s an above and beyond venture for those involved. So we’re doing the best we can to deliver the best possible film. Trust me when I say that many others have tried to get involved in this story to help support the project, but instead of accelerating the process they have often slowed it down. Nothing is in the way now, so our efforts are full steam ahead. And if you’re not aware, we are the third production company to work on this film over the past several years. And the only one who has been able to get it to this point, which is, almost complete. The biggest concern Stan had from the very beginning was making sure that his story was going to be told with the utmost integrity. Many other people have wanted to take his story and twist it into something different. Our story is about Stan and Lisa, as much as it is about what Stan has experienced. It’s a story everyone can relate to because Stan and Lisa are ordinary folks just like you and me, yet they are living through extraordinary circumstances. A little more patience and we’ll have more news about how the film will be released. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read the other posts on our site as well as the comments below them. You’ll see that we are doing the best we can with the resources we have. Thanks for dropping by and hang it there a little longer!

We’re neck deep in the edit and getting closer to finishing. There are quite a few updates in the comments of this post. Check it out and let me know if you have any other questions. We’re looking to build a network of people on every continent that will help spread the word, so if you’d like to help, let us know!

Jon, I agree totally with your plan for telling Stan and Lisa’s human story. While I loved Stan’s books, it was Lisa’s that made a stronger emotional connection. I think the film audience will also connect to the story as you say.

Just watched the YouTube video and found it very interesting. I am eagerly awaiting “Extraordinary.” Have you noticed any interfence with its production or release, i.e. anyone or anything NOT wanting it completed or ready for public distribution?

Thanks for dropping by Nicholas. I wouldn’t say we’ve had direct interference. We’ve actually received calls from Audrey telling us to move forward with the project!

Stan Romanek and his family are brave, but no one can deny that you are as brave as they are.

Do you think the movie will be released before September?

Thank you for your support! It is greatly appreciated. We’ve received a lot of international interest in the film so we’re excited by the potential reach this will have. We’re still in post-production and will have a better idea of where things will land later this summer. Stay tuned!

It’s July, can we get another update or something?

    • Jon Sumple
      July 7, 2012 | 11:37 am

We’re still in post production. As has been noted numerous times in the comments and posts, we will keep everyone abreast of next steps when we get there. This film is being produced on a shoe-string budget which means everyone involved is working on this in addition to working to pay the bills. Hang in there, we’re doing the best we can with the limited resources we have. And if you know anyone who is interested in supporting the film from a financial POV, please let us know!

lots of people would be willing to donate money. you just need to spread the word.. maybe make a video on youtube or something. everyone is dying to see it and will do what they can to help.

        • Jon Sumple
          November 20, 2012 | 4:52 pm

We appreciate the interest, Brandon! The crowd-funding route was considered, but our financial needs don’t warrant the effort to run an effective kickstarter or indiegogo campaign. Managing those campaigns well (I’ve done it before) requires a time commitment above and beyond the project. Those involved in this project have regular full time jobs, so this has been something that has been worked on in between work that pays the bills. It hasn’t been a funding issue, it has been a time issue. We’re getting close. The biggest need we have for the project will be getting the word out. We’d love to have a street team on every continent who is willing to get the word out. We’ll have a post on this soon, so stay tuned.

How’s everything going with the documentary? Any idea of a release date? Just want to thank you guys for taking the time to get this overwhelming evidence out to the public.

      July 7, 2012 | 11:28 am

We are still in post production. As has been mentioned numerous times on the site and in responses to comments we won’t have a release date until we explore distribution opportunities via film festivals and screeners. Any news about next steps will appear here, so stay tuned. If you don’t see any updates it means we’re still plugging away. When producing a film on a shoestring budget (or smaller, which this is), it doesn’t happen overnight. We’re doing the best we can to finish the film!
